The OBG Trophy

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the OBG Trophy on Friday, 24th October. Despite the less-than-perfect weather, it was a fantastic day filled with great company and plenty of memorable moments (even if my own golf left a bit to be desired!).

We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to all the members and staff who helped make the day run so smoothly; your support and enthusiasm are what make these events so enjoyable.

A special shoutout also goes to the six generous businesses who sponsored the event:

  • Home Instead West Lancs & Chorley

Member Spotlight

This month’s Member Spotlight features our Lady Captain, Rachel Rowlandson.

Many of you already know Rachel from around the club, but there’s much more to discover — from her professional life to her journey in golf and everything in between!

Q. How long have you been a member at Hurlston Hall, and what first attracted you to the club?

Rachel: I joined Hurlston Hall in 2021. I started in the ladies group lessons for a few months and then what initially drew me in was the people I met and the staff at those lessons.  They gave me such a great feeling. The club has such a warm and inclusive atmosphere. As a mixed club, everyone is genuinely welcoming, no matter which section you're part of. And of course, the clubhouse! The club house It’s hands down the best place to return to after a round - there’s nothing quite like it.

Q. Can you tell us a bit about your journey to becoming Lady Captain — what inspired you to take on the role?

Rachel: From the moment I joined, I felt like I was part of a true community. There’s always something happening, whether it’s competitions or fun social events. I’ve always admired the incredible work our past captains have done, especially the fundraising efforts for various charities over the years. One of my first experiences of that community spirit was organising the Longest Day event in 2022. It was amazing to see so many members come together for such a big challenge and it's something that I have continued to arrange year on year. Being part of the bronze and silver teams also gave me a real sense of camaraderie and pride in representing the club. All of that inspired me to step up and give something back.

Q. What has been the highlight of your captaincy so far? Rachel: Without a doubt, meeting Captain Roy. It’s funny to think that before I became Lady Captain, our paths had never really crossed. But from the moment we started working together, everything just clicked. We’ve built a fantastic partnership—one based on mutual respect, shared responsibilities, and a genuine enjoyment of working together. Our goal from day one has been to leave the club in a better place than we found it, and we truly hope we’ve created a legacy of fun, inclusivity, and teamwork. (That’s not to say there was anything wrong with the club before, but I believe each year as new captains take over, they strive to take steps forward)

Q. How would you describe the spirit and camaraderie among the ladies’ section here at Hurlston Hall?

Rachel: It’s something I always say, this place is truly special. The ladies’ section is incredibly welcoming, whether you’re new to golf, enjoy social games such as 9 & wines, or are part of our Sunday Drivers away day or Sunshine Breaks. We all share a love for the game, but more than that, we genuinely enjoy each other’s company. It’s a fantastic place to make lifelong friends.

Q. Do you have a favourite hole on the course — and what makes it stand out for you?

Rachel: The 17th is my favourite, not just because it’s one step closer to the clubhouse! I love the challenge of driving over the water. It’s unlike any other hazard on the course and always keeps you on your toes. I enjoy a good challenge, and that hole delivers every time.

Q. Are there any events or traditions at the club that you look forward to each year?

Rachel: The Longest Day is a standout. There’s such a great sense of achievement in seeing everyone come together—whether they’re playing the full challenge or volunteering on the day. It’s all in support of the Captains’ Charity, and the atmosphere is just incredible.

Q. What initiatives or changes have you been most proud to support during your time as Lady Captain?

Rachel: One of the highlights was introducing the Summer BBQ event. It was a brand-new Saturday event with a double shotgun start (morning and afternoon) which was a first for us. We made it an invitation day, so it was a great opportunity to showcase our beautiful course and clubhouse. It wasn’t just about the golf either—family and friends joined us for music and a fantastic social atmosphere around the putting green. We also introduced the captains@hurlstonhall.co.uk email address, which has made it easier for members to get in touch with both Roy and me. It reflects how we operate, as a team, not just as individual captains.

Q. How do you see the future of women’s golf at Hurlston Hall — and what advice would you give to new lady members?

Rachel: The future of women’s golf at Hurlston Hall is incredibly bright. We have a strong & supportive community that continues to grow and there’s a real drive to encourage more women to get involved. Whether they’re new to the game or returning after a break or have recently joined our club. My advice to new lady members would be: get involved! Join in with the events, the teams, the social golf. You’ll find a warm welcome, lots of laughter, and a group of women who are passionate about the game and about supporting each other. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, You’ll be part of something really special!

Q. What does Hurlston Hall mean to you personally?

Rachel: For me, Hurlston Hall represents pride and belonging. It’s a club that truly welcomes everyone, from brand-new members to seasoned pros. I’m proud to be part of such a supportive and inclusive community.

Q. (This was provided by our last guest Cathy Simmonds) Where would your favourite destination in the world be?

Rachel: Without a doubt it's New York City. There’s just something electric about it. The energy, the diversity, the iconic skyline. It’s a place that never sleeps and never stops inspiring. Whether you’re strolling through Central Park, catching a Broadway show, or just people watching in Times Square, there’s always something happening. I love the buzz, the culture, and the feeling that anything is possible there. It’s a city that leaves a lasting impression every time you visit.

That’s a wrap for this month’s Member Spotlight! We hope you enjoyed getting to know Rachel a little better.

Stay tuned for next month’s edition, when we’ll be chatting with another familiar face — you won’t want to miss it!
