Golf Course Updates
A message from our Greenkeepers
There's been plenty happening on the course over the last few months as we continue to prepare Hurlston for the changing seasons.
September, we have continued with our everyday maintenance tasks, including cutting the greens, tees, fairways, rough and semi-rough. These regular tasks help us maintain a well-defined visual presentation of the course while also keeping it in good playing condition.
The Artisans are also continually strimming and keeping on top of untidy areas around the course, helping to maintain the overall appearance and presentation.
We have also been continuing with filling and seeding the areas where a number of tree stumps were previously removed. This work will help these areas establish and blend back into the surrounding course over time.
Last week, we planted a mixture of rye and fescue grass seed into some of our struggling tees, including the 6th, 7th, 12th, 15th and 18th. We used our Vredo seeding machine to carry out this work. The thinking behind this is that we still have a couple of months of growing conditions remaining, giving the seed time to establish and provide better grass coverage going into the winter this will carry on into October.
We also plan to carry out similar work on some of the struggling approaches that were badly burnt off during the drought period we experienced. This should give these areas an opportunity to recover and establish new growth before the winter months. We are also continuing to keep on top of divoting the tees in order to maintain decent playing surfaces and encourage good recovery of the grass.
The drought also caused us some issues with disease on the greens. We are planning to treat the greens by spraying them and applying specific products that will help the grass grow out of the existing disease, while also helping with disease prevention going forward. These measures will continue over the coming months as we monitor the greens and manage any further disease issues.
Golf Course Works – October
As we move into October, the team will be carrying out a number of works to prepare the course for the winter months and help maintain good playing conditions.
Ditch and drainage work: This week ditches will be flayed and drains jetted to improve water flow and drainage across the course. This is being carried out to help reduce the risk of flooding and minimise potential course closures during periods of wet weather.
Greens maintenance: The greens will be scarified again, with areas affected by the summer heat being overseeded to encourage recovery and improve the playing surface going into the autumn and winter.
Temporary greens: As part of our winter preparations, temporary greens will be reviewed and, where necessary, improvements will be made to ensure they are as playable as possible should frosty conditions require them to be brought into use.
Roped areas and buggy use: Roped-off areas will be reviewed as conditions change. We would also ask members and visitors to help protect the course by keeping buggies away from approaches and areas around the greens wherever possible, particularly when conditions are wet, and using the drier areas of the course.
The aim of this work is to prepare the course for the winter months, improve drainage and protect playing surfaces, helping us to keep the course open and in good condition wherever weather conditions allow.
