Welcome to Golf Monthly - Dec 2025!

Welcome to Hurlston Hall Monthly!

December has arrived, bringing crisp mornings, festive spirit, and plenty still happening around the club as we wrap up another great year at Hurlston Hall. Even with the cooler weather settling in, our course team continues to work tirelessly to keep the greens in top condition, so there’s still every reason to get out and enjoy a winter round.

This month, we’ve got updates on our festive events, winter competitions, and a few end-of-year highlights to keep you in the loop and ready for what’s ahead.

Whether you’re braving the fairways, joining us for a seasonal celebration, or simply warming up with a coffee in the clubhouse, we’re delighted to share this festive season with you at Hurlston Hall.

We’d love your input! If you have any ideas for making the newsletter even bigger and better in 2026, or if there’s anything you’d like to see more of, please share your thoughts after reading.

Key Dates & Upcoming Events

Your dedication, sportsmanship, and passion for the game shone through at every event. Thanks to your support, the evening was a truly special celebration of our players’ achievements. Seeing the room full of familiar faces and club spirit was a wonderful reminder of what makes our club so much more than just a golf club.

A special thank you to all the H&C Committee members for their tireless work this past year, without which none of the competitions would have been possible. Your dedication behind the scenes ensures every event runs smoothly and makes our club experience truly memorable.

Well done once again to all of our winners — here’s to more great golf and more great moments in 2026!

Golf Course Updates

ree

  • Course Manager's Blog

If you haven’t already, stay up to date with the latest course developments by reading the Course Manager’s Blog here.

We always welcome your feedback so please share any comments to help us continue improving the course.

Despite the wetter weather, our greens are recovering well from recent renovations, with verti-draining and light topdressing supporting healthy growth. The height of cut has been raised to strengthen the turf and reduce disease risk, so you may notice slightly slower greens.

Pitch marks remain a key site for disease, so please repair them promptly to help keep our putting surfaces smooth. Meanwhile, bunker renovations are underway, with sand replacement and drainage improvements ensuring they’ll be in top condition for the next season.

  • Winter Mats Reminder – Important Course Guidelines

As winter conditions set in, we want to remind all members that the use of Winter Mats is compulsory in the general area of the course. The general area includes all parts of the course except:

  • Teeing areas,

  • Putting greens,

  • Bunkers,

  • Penalty areas

Important notes for Winter:

  • Winter Mats may be used on the teeing area.

  • Please refer to the daily course update on the use of tee-boxes and where possible and advised use the forward/winter tees.

  • You must not use your putter when your ball is on a mat (Rule E-12).

  • All bunkers are currently G.U.R. (Ground Under Repair) – please avoid them.

Following these guidelines helps protect your course during the winter months and ensures the best playing conditions for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation!

  • Buggy & Trolley Status  Please keep an eye on the daily course status updates going into Winter regarding buggy/trolley usage on the golf course.

Gentle Reminder: Checking In & Respect Tee-Time Bookings

To help us keep the course safe and enjoyable for everyone, we kindly remind all members that they must check-in at the Golf Shop before heading out. This allows the golf team to know who’s on the course at any given time throughout the day. This simple step supports the club in managing the course responsibly and ensures everything operates as it should throughout the day.

We also want to make sure all members have a fair chance to book tee-times. If you can no longer make your tee-time, please cancel as early as possible so another member has the opportunity to play. Whether you’re playing in a 1, 2, 3, or 4-ball, each member is responsible for managing and maintaining their own tee-time bookings. Members who book tee-times and do not attend will be contacted.

Stay Connected – Enable Notifications

To make sure you don’t miss any important updates, events, or announcements, please take a moment to check your notifications on the IG App and ensure you’re signed up to receive notifications from the club. We want to make sure every member stays in the loop!

Not presenting your card means purchases will be charged at full price, so keeping it handy helps you get the most from your membership privileges.

Member Spotlight

This month’s Member Spotlight features our H&C Committee Chair, Tina Kinsey.

ree

While many members know Tina from her presence around the club, her background, and journey into golf offer far more insight into the person behind the role.

Q. How long have you been a member at Hurlston Hall, and what first drew you to the club?

Tina: I was driving past and saw a sign saying there was a new Golf Club with a phone number to ring. Following a short interview in the old Fishery hut. I joined in September 1993.  It literally was a building site with only the foundations of the clubhouse and acres of newly formed banks and slopes. Monthly site visits and walks during the construction, to the first 3 holes we played in September 1994. The rest is history.

Q. What motivated you to take on the role of Chair of the Handicap and Competitions Committee?

Tina: The post became vacant at very short notice and being a member of the committee I was asked if I would take on the role. I've previously been a member of the committee for many years so I know the history. I've always been involved with sports organisations so I suppose I couldn't refuse.

Q. For those who might not know — can you briefly explain what the committee does and what your responsibilities include?

Tina: The committee oversees the organisation and running of all the competitions at the club. We run 4 competitions every week and organisation and policing takes lots of man hours. This also includes everything to do with the World Handicapping System for initial handicaps, overseas scores, general play scores and regular handicap reviews. The committee has 12 members. All are hard working and committed

Q. How do you ensure that competitions are fair, enjoyable, and well-organised for all members?

Tina: Consistency - all competitions are conducted under the rules of golf, WHS, and our own conditions of play. We ensure any action is discussed fully to ensure fairness, 'for the many not the few' and consistent with previous  decisions

Q. What’s been one of your proudest moments or most successful events since taking on the role?

Tina: Every week has its ups and downs. To be able to pivot when this predictable English Weather throws a curveball, to have the committee and members support when having to cancel a 2 day event at the last minute and all the committee to work together to rearrange, in the end, a very successful competition. Proud moments are for the committee to own - not me

Q. Handicaps can be a hot topic! How do you approach keeping things transparent and fair across all levels of golfers?

Tina: That's down to the handicapping system, the County Golf Association and the committee. All procedures are laid down but we do have to police to ensure members are applying the rules correctly. All our records are open to inspection and we ourselves are answerable to the Club Committee and policed by the County

Q. What is your favourite style of competitions?

Tina: Strokeplay - it is the pure and original form of the game

Q. What do you think makes the competition scene at Hurlston Hall stand out compared to other clubs?

Tina: Equality through all the sections, the Diversity of taking everyone's differences into account, the Inclusivity of being aware of everyone's needs and adjusting accordingly, BUT at the end of the round the camaraderie in and around the clubhouse is second to none. No matter how your round went you can always expect laughter and banter to greet you when you enter.

Q. What advice would you give to members who might be nervous about entering their first competition?

Tina: Take the bull by the horns and go for it, we've all been there, but get advice from the staff in the golf centre.  They know the membership and will always point you in the right direction. A friendly face is always there on the first tee.

Q. And finally — when you’re not managing handicaps and results, what’s your favourite way to enjoy the club?

Tina: Nice relaxing food and drink with friends in the clubhouse watching sport.

That’s a wrap for this month’s Member Spotlight! We hope you enjoyed getting to know Tina a little better.

We hope you are enjoying these Spotlight Chats. Stay tuned for next month’s edition, when we’ll be chatting with another member.
